According to the 1936 Gorby Book written by Alva Gorby, and also the 1979 version of the same written by Melba Gorby Beard, the following appears concerning Jonathon Gorby’s (aft 1782 to 1855) youngest son Samuel:

Samuel Gorby, son of Jonathon, went to Missouri and nothing is known of him but the names of four of his children.

Ethel and Tella Gorby – Twins.
John Gorby.
William Gorby.

In 2008 we ran across the following book:

“General History of Shelby County, Missouri 1911” written by Shelby Countians, published 1911:

This book contained a one and one-half page biography of Samuel Gorby.  Here is a summary of the information it contained:

Father Jonathon Gorby, born in DE, died 1841. His occupation was Farmer all of his life.  He had nine children, all died before 1911 but Samuel.  Jonathon married Anne Davis, born in VA, died 1833.

About Samuel:
Alive in 1911, over 80 years of age (82).
Born in Stark Co, OH on May 4, 1829.
Taught school in OH.
Moved to Hannibal, MO in 1854 and taught school there for 3 years. Moved to Jefferson Township, Shelby Co, MO in 1857. Taught school there and in Monroe Co, MO for 40 years.  After teaching raised livestock.
Married in 1854 to Eliza Firestine, born OH, died 1884.
Seven children, five died before 1911.
Ethel Gorby m. John Swearingen, lived in CA in 1911.
John Gorby, lived in Shelby Co, MO in 1911.
Married in 1888 to Mrs Mary (McCloskey) Benson, born in PA. Lifelong Democrat, served as member of the school board.

One thing that we did not expect to learn was that the mother of Eliza Firestine, Samuel Gorby’s first wife, was also the second wife of John Stallsmith, father of David Hoover Stallsmith who married Julia Ann Gorby, Samuel’s sister.  So Samuel’s mother-in-law was also his sister’s mother-in-law even though their spouses were not related.

Samuel and Eliza actually had seven children, the ones listed in the Gorby Book were the youngest four.  ‘Stella’ was Estelle and ‘Tella’ was Ethel.  Here is the complete list of their children:

One thing quickly noted is that the five eldest children all died at a young age; William died at age 19, Ada, Margaret and Estella all died in their 20s and Palace died at age 36.  Ada and William died without issue and Estella’s two children predeceased her.

Most of the descendants of Samuel and Eliza descend from their daughters Palace and Margaret, who married brothers Albert Hamilton and Thomas Jefferson Timbrook, sons of Harrison Timbrook and Eliza Lockmiller.

John Firestine Gorby had four children, but only one had offspring, so when Samuel C Gorby died in 1976, then his wife in 1983, the Gorby name disappears from Shelby Co, MO and from this branch of the Family.

We have tracked down all the descendants of Samuel and Eliza.  Bowing to proper genealogical propriety, we shall not divulge the names of any living descendants.  Every person in this list has been documented through obituary, birth, marriage, death, military or census records.
